Sustainable Distribution Services: Key Strategies for a Green Future

Logista leads the way in implementing sustainable distribution services, ensuring minimal environmental impact through strict sustainability standards.

Sustainable logistics reduces your carbon footprint. Sustainable distribution services without compromising service excellence are a challenge that we at Logista have been addressing for decades. Meeting the commitments set out in the 2030 Agenda implies carrying out a task that optimises the use of resources.

Logistics companies take on the challenge of implementing policies that achieve this goal. Logista, as an integrated logistics company, has a history of commitment to green distribution.

This objective is achieved through coordinated and systematic work, done in the 7 countries where the company is present (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland).

What are sustainable distribution services?

Sustainable distribution services are defined by their ability to minimise their carbon footprint and maximise efficiency at every stage of the logistics process. Logista has achieved this commitment for several consecutive years, and in 2024, we renewed our ISO 14064 certification for the fifth year. We are also part of the FTSE4Good IBEX, a benchmark index for companies with responsible environmental practices.

We also monitor key environmental indicators at Logista and transport subsidiaries.

Why sustainability is key
to modern retailing

There are several reasons to work for a green future:

●        Efficiency. Working efficiently, incorporating the latest technologies, helps to achieve sustainable distribution. The company is committed to developing the Energy Efficiency Plan and the Sustainability Policy to improve these ratios by reducing energy consumption. The “Green Transport” project calculates real transport information to reduce consumption and emissions. Logista’s network of platforms, with more than 700 in the territories where it operates, provides capillarity and favours these economies of scale. Furthermore, working with suppliers is also essential to improve efficiency.

●        Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Logista is aware of the need to contribute to CSR policies to ensure sustainable distribution services. This has been done by cooperating with reforestation initiatives, such as the Reforest Project, or by collaborating with local or international initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.

●        Competitiveness. Logista follows the standards set by the 2030 Agenda, implementing internal policies that not only apply to our fleet, but also extend to our employees through our Corporate Procurement Policy.

Impact of sustainability
on distribution services

The impact of sustainability in distribution services is significant, promoting as it does energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and improving competitiveness. Logista acts proactively to ensure sustainability in its operations.

There are a number of ways to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions. But a central aspect of this process is undoubtedly the use of green vehicles and green energy in everyday operations.

Our 2024-2026 sustainability plan includes the use of biofuels to decarbonise the transport segment, which accounts for more than 90% of Logista’s total emissions.

We have introduced biofuels by initiating pilot tests in all our long-distance transport modes, particularly in Transportes El Mosca, where we have reached 0.5 million litres of biodiesel in the last two months (May-June 2024).

Our focus is to achieve more than 90% of km travelled with sustainable vehicles by 2026.

In addition, our commitment to the use of sustainable vehicles has been renewed, taking on the challenge of incorporating the acquisitions of Transportes El Mosca and Carbó Colbatallé.

Looking at the last mile segment, the business we do through Nacex by Logista, we can say that we have reduced our carbon footprint per shipment by 32% in the last 4 years. This is due to:

●        Incorporation of sustainable vehicles.

●        Optimisation of resources and routes.

Green vehicles

●        PMV - (Personal Mobility Vehicle) Scooters, electric bicycles and tricycles.

●        BEV - (Battery Electric Vehicles) Motorcycles, electric vans.

●        In April 2024 vs. 2023 we doubled (114%) the green kilometres travelled, reaching 1 million km electric last mile in a single month.

Logista is also committed to the use of renewable energies in its centres and platforms. An example of this is that in the centres under direct management in Spain and Portugal, priority is given to the use of electricity from renewable sources, reaching 90% of energy consumption through renewable energy.

Circular Economy - Logista has a clear commitment to Box Recycling, which is one of the main materials used in logistics management. Boxes are used 5 - 6 times depending on the business and activity. As part of our sustainability plan, we aim to increase the recycling of the boxes used in the three countries in which we operate, currently above 80%* in the reuse of our boxes (average between Spain, Italy and France) (*only applies to tobacco boxes, not pharma).

Recycle-cyg - Recycling of plastic NGP devices and batteries at the point of sale for further treatment. The project has started in Italy where it has been very well received. In addition, a pilot test is being carried out in Spain and in France the installation of recycling boxes has started in one region with the intention to expand to the rest of the country in the coming months. As part of our sustainability plan, the objective for 2026 is to reach 33,800 points of sale that adhere to the recycling initiative for these products in the three countries. To date, we have reached 84% of the target.

Sustainability means not only working for a cleaner planet, but also maintaining the quality of our service. Logista and its subsidiaries achieve both objectives effectively.

Benefits of adopting

Adopting sustainable distribution services offers multiple benefits, including:
