- Since 2018, NACEX has moved more than 147 tonnes of plastic caps for charity that have been used to fund research into Dent’s disease.
The collaboration by NACEX, Logista’s express parcel and document delivery company, with the Dent’s Disease Association (ASDENT - Asociación de la enfermedad de Dent) through the “Donate a Plastic cap, a Great Gesture of Charity” campaign has just turned seven years old. During this time, the company has transported more than 147 tonnes of plastic caps for charity that have helped fund research into Dent disease.
Dent‘s disease is a rare, genetic disease that affects about 400 people worldwide and is caused by a mutation in a gene on the X chromosome. It affects the normal function of the kidneys, preventing the body from assimilating essential elements such as potassium, magnesium, proteins, vitamins, and calcium, among other things.
The “Donate a Plastic Cap a Great Gesture of Charity” campaign, which began in May 2018, aims to raise funds to finance the two research projects promoted by ASDENT. One is at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and the other is at the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Hospital in Tenerife.
Specifically, more than 300 franchises and NACEX offices, in addition to customers who have so requested, have bins for collecting plastic caps in their facilities. The company is responsible for collecting and transferring these plastic caps to its hub in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, where a recycling company buys them based on weight.
“Between 3.5 and 5.9 per cent of the world’s population is affected by one of the 6,417 identified rare diseases. These patients are especially disadvantaged, and working to put their situation under the public spotlight and promote medical research is vital. At NACEX, we are very committed to this cause and our collaboration with ASDENT is based on that commitment,” explains Arianne Muñoz, Marketing and CSR Director at NACEX.
The “Donate a Plastic Cap, a Great Gesture of Charity” campaign is in line with NACEX’s CSR policy. In particular, as part of actions to promote health and medical research. In the same vein, the company also supports different projects by organisations such as FEDER, the Ronald McDonald Foundation, and the Josep Carreras Foundation.
In addition, the collaboration between NACEX and ASDENT aligns with the company’s environmental commitment, as it enables the recovery of a large volume of plastic, promoting the recycling of caps. This highly contaminating waste is targeted by NACEX, which applies ecodesign to its packaging and has circular initiatives such as the Bag Back project to reduce the consumption of this material.
In 2018, the “Donate a Plastic Cap, a Great Gesture of Charity” campaign was the winner in two categories, “Best CSR Project in the Courier Sector” and “Best Responsible Project for the Support of Medical Research in the Courier Sector”, at the Social Enterprise Awards.
“All these years, the involvement of our collaborators and customers has been key to the success of the campaign with ASDENT, and we will never tire of thanking them,” concludes Arianne Muñoz.
