Logista Parcel invests six million euros so far this year to strengthen its cold chain capabilities against heatwaves

  • The company handles 11 million temperature-controlled shipments annually and operates a network of 85 temperature-controlled facilities.

The successive heatwaves recorded across the Iberian Peninsula in recent summers have posed a growing challenge for the logistics of temperature-sensitive products. The distribution of products in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food requires an uninterrupted cold chain to ensure their quality and safety, compelling companies to continuously strengthen and review their processes, infrastructure, and technological solutions.

In this context, Logista Parcel, Logista’s temperature-controlled last-mile transport network, continues to enhance its operational capabilities to respond to increasingly demanding climate conditions. This year alone, Logista Parcel has invested nearly €6 million to strengthen its cold chain operations, with upgrades aimed at expanding storage capacity and modernising infrastructure.

The company manages around 11 million cold chain shipments annually for the Pharma and Food sectors, supported by a network of 85 temperature-controlled facilities and a refrigerated storage capacity exceeding 50,000 pallet positions.

Among other initiatives, the investment has been allocated to upgrading freezing chambers at its facilities in Logroño, Girona, Tarragona, Vitoria, and Zaragoza, as well as optimising the operational structure of its hubs in Barcelona and Madrid.

In addition, the company has invested in generators for all its facilities, ensuring operational continuity in the event of power-related incidents, such as the widespread blackout experienced in 2025.

Technological innovation

During periods of exceptionally high temperatures, which are becoming increasingly frequent during the summer months, operations become significantly more demanding. Intensifying processes to minimise the time goods spend outside temperature-controlled environments and pre-cooling vehicles before deployment are key measures for reducing risks during the most sensitive stages of the logistics process.

However, if there is one factor that truly makes a difference in dealing with these conditions, it is anticipation. In this regard, digitalisation plays a fundamental role for Logista Parcel.

The company's proprietary Hermes platform enables continuous temperature monitoring at every stage of transport and incorporates customer-specific alerts and alarms. The resulting data is accessible online, providing quality teams with complete visibility of operations.

In addition, the company operates a temperature probe monitoring system across all its vehicles and facilities, designed to detect any temperature deviations and trigger preventive measures. If a shipment exceeds the established temperature thresholds, it is automatically blocked in the system and cannot be dispatched until it has been validated.

Alberto Pérez Salillas, General Manager of Logista Parcel, commented: “Increasingly frequent heatwaves are becoming a structural factor that requires even greater care in cold chain management. With our investment of nearly €6 million so far this year, Logista Parcel continues to strengthen a logistics model based on anticipation, traceability and continuous investment, with the goal of ensuring that all products reach their destination in optimal condition while maintaining the integrity of the cold chain, regardless of external temperatures.”
